Veracruz Carnaval dates for 2005... Feb 1-10

TC Nov 11th, 2004 06:31 AM

Is this a question or a statement?

Carnaval celebrations in some areas of Mexico have been moved back one week to accommodate Mexican presidental elections on Feb. 6.

Some celebrations, such as Cozumel, are being changed to accomodate local election dates--since these are no alcohol dates. Believe it is not the presidential election since this is a 6 year term and the last one was 2000.

Hello Robert; I got the impression that this is a major election year from the following announcement in the Cozumel newspaper. Maybe the translation from Cozumel Insider is incorrect? It is confusing - I hope the dates for Carnaval are correct.

Cozumel Carnaval 2005 Dates are February 9 - 16
The Cozumel Carnaval Committee has finalized the dates for Carnaval 2005. A logistical issue arises in 2005 since by law Cozumel local elections for Presidente must be held on February 6, 2005. This very important date falls during the traditional religious calendar dates for "Fat Tuesday" & Ash Wednesday and as such would pose 1) logistical problems for all city personnel having two such important priorities simultaneously and 2) an inconvenience to visitors since no liquor can be sold for the 1-2 days surrounding the election date. Consequently, local officials have decided to move Cozumel Carnaval 2005 to the following week and are in the process of notifying the general public and all those in the tourism sector so as to ensure those planning to visit Cozumel during Carnaval will have the correct dates for the celebration. Carnaval 2005 will be held February 9 - 16, 2005.

TC..

Presidente, would be Municipal President or Mayor of the city in a US sense.

And we do have a "Dry Law" not selling any alcohol 48 hours prior to the elections and 24 hours after.

I think Maria's point was that in the Port of Veracruz, those will be the dates. And this will be only if Governer elections aren't repeated because of electoral fraud.

Sol: Thank you so much for the culture lesson. I've learned something today that I didn't know. Does THE President (of the country of Mexico) have a different title than the "local" president?

sol_veracruzano Nov 12th, 2004 01:10 PM

Lol

just plain
Presidente de la Republica Mexicana
"President of The Mexican Republic"

Sol beat me to the response about the "Presidente". It is a bit confusing when they refer to the election as the election for president--doesn't say they are referring to the municipal president! (with all the campaiging that goes on in Cozumel, you would think it was a national election!!)

Rob

You can imagine how much money is moved around in election time in Cancun, being this the wealthiest tourist spot in Mexico.

Everyone wants a bite out of it.
