Car tour from Mexacali to Los Mochis train to Chihauhau,Copper Canyon car tour to El Paso

We would like to rent a car in Palm Springs, drive to Mexicali take Rt2 to Los Mochis drop our car then take the train through the Copper Canyon to Chihuahua. Pick up a rental car and drive on up to El Paso. We are seasoned travelers but have never been to Mexico. We never join group tours,(we like to be independent). We just need some info on security and car travelin that country. Anything certain areas we should watch out for. Thanks for any help or advice. Linda

We took the train through the Cooper Canyon 3 years ago - the most spectacular journey I have ever taken.

You need to be aware that almost everyone else on the train will be part of a tour group, but at the hotel in Divisadero we were seated apart for meals.

Found Mexican driving no worse than Parisian or Italian - did a tour of the colonial cities after renting a car in Mexico City.

If we from England and the wrong side of the road can do it, anybody can!

Took the Copper Canyon tour last October. The train is very comfortable. They have a dining car, toilet facilities and security on the train. I took the trip from Chihuahua down to Los Mochis; stopping at several towns along the way for a day or two. Fabulous trip!! Always felt safe. P.S. Take a sweater with you on the train; it tended to be somewhat cold.

I doubt you can rent a car in Palm Springs and take it across the border, let alone leave it in Los Mochis. You can rent a car in Mexico once you've crossed the border. The train trip is world famous. We had a client who took it about ten days ago. If you'd like I can forward an email he sent me that goes into considerable detail about his experience on the train, making reservations, how much it cost, like that. Keith
