Car Rental in Cusco?

Hello,

My 2 friends and I are travelling to Cusco in November. We're having trouble finding a car rental. The only one we've come up with is through Hertz for around $550 for 4 days.

Any recommendations? Any info you could pass along would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Let me ask this: Do you absolutely have to rent a car? Having one while you're in Cusco is not only unnecessary, it's a hassle. I assume you're going to Machu Picchu too? You can't get there by car. What would you do with it while you're there? That leaves the Sacred Valley. It is nice to drive out there, but it's also easy to get around with an occasional taxi ride.

Thanks Jeff. Yes, we only plan on having a car while in the Sacred Valley...definitely not while we're in Cusco, and we'll be taking the train to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo.

We're pretty independent travellers and like to see all the "nooks and crannies." Thanks.

ambage - I'd recommend hiring a driver for the day. It's not quite the same as being on your own since you have a stranger with you. But there are advantages, as in the driver will know exactly where to go, and if he speaks English, can defintely enhance the experience. I can recommend Percy Salas, whom we used as a guide for several days. You could get a taxi for cheaper, but the driver likely won't speak much English. You can find Percy's contact info in my trip report. Type Karen and Julie in the search box and it'll pop up. Good luck - you'll love the Sacred Valley.

ambage, Hiring a driver would be much easier and less expensive than renting a car. Your hotel could help arrange a driver. Also, some tour companies (found along the main square in Cusco) can arrange a private tour either pre-set or customized to your wants. Happy travels. Peru is marvelous!
