Car In Puerto Viejo

While in Pueto Viejo, I will have the use of a car for 2 days. Any suggestions for short road trips.

Manzanillo and kayak or hike south and discover some beautiful coves.

Cahuita Nat Park north and also visit sloth sancuary, Aviarios del Caribe also north. Getting up close to Buttercup is cool.

Try to find out about Rancho Grande out past the little town of BriBri. If you can hook up with Timateo Jackson, he can take you into the forest to their home in the woods--all open air/hammock/open fire type place. Extremely interesting. You have to cross a suspended bridge on foot to get to it. He will have rubber boots for you to wear. It's a little hard to find, but maybe someone can direct you there. We drove back and forth looking for "the place", and finally chanced upon Mr. Jackson walking down the road. We stopped to ask for more directions, and he took it from there! Have fun!

Also you can contact Abel Bustamante for guided hiking into the Gandoca Manzanillo Reserved, and points south past Manzanillo.

Just keep an eye on your gas gauge. Things might have changed since I was there in 2004, but at that time there were no gas stations in or around Puerto Viejo. There were a couple of places which sold gas out of drums in the back yard, but it's a hassle.
