Cancun to Tulum in late Feb, any recs for a budget traveler?
Hi! My friend and I are looking for an inexpensive (under $50/day) place that's relatively quiet where there is easy access to diving, snorkeling, body surfing, decent restaurants and beautiful beaches of course. We're not too picky about accomodations, but I have no clue with so many choices. Is Cancun too touristy? I've heard good things about Playa del Carmen and surrounding towns. Any response would be greatly appreciated.
Funny you should ask. I'm researching the same trip - although I'm going in either April or May - and found what looks to be a terrific little place. It's called Cabanas Copal. The low season rate for a cabana with private bath is $50; for shared bath, it's $30-$40.

Here's the website: http://www.cabanascopal.com/

Gee! Great minds think alike! From what I've heard, unless you're into crowds and partying hearty, avoid Cancun. Have heard great things about "Riviera Maya" but never been there. I've been researching the Net for the "perfect" budget getaway until my eyeballs have shrivelled! Have compiled tons of database info but it's like sorting through the haystack to find the needle! We're going late April, looking for the best value for our tight dollar. Not a rustic shack (palapas -- any place with "romantic mosquito netting" tells me there's too many romantic mosquitos) but not a resort either. My sister insists on air conditioning unless it's smack on the beach (can't blame her). Has anyone stayed at: 1) The Maya Bric? 2) El Tucan Condotel? 3) Villas Mayas Bungalows (next to Club Akumal Caribe)? Villas Xaguar? By the way, if anyone would like my database FYI, if you have Microsoft Works, I'll forward it to you. I've been data-gathering on about 41 properties from $20 a night to $80 a night from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum, including Web site links, etc. Still many blanks but getting there.
Thanks!
I've never been there but after exhaustive research, I found the best deal going was the Maya Bric in Playa Del Carmen. I asked about it myself and two people said they had stayed there in the past and really liked it. Small, simple, clean. But the amenities are great for the price ($35 a night off-season INCLUDES tax), and you can't beat the location if you want to be in the heart of things! I also understand it's a favorite with scuba divers, and it's mentioned in Frommer's online (sorry Fodor's). Link: http://www.xaac.com/playacar/mayabric.htm
These are other places I found on the Net with a base rate (off-season) of $30 or under:
Rosa Mirador at http://www.playaguide.com/hotels/rosa.html
El Elefante at http://playacarguide.com/prin-ele.htm
La Rana Cansada at http://www.ranacansada.com/english.htm
Delfin at http://www.hoteldelfin.com/todo.html
Posada Jardin at http://www.xaac.com/playacar/jardin.htm

Also, try looking at this in Akumal -- NICE and quiet, but I think you'd have to rent a car. http://www.akumal-ik.com/roxana.htm

And if you want it really remote and rustic, I found this listing down by the Tulum Ruins:
http://www.hotelstulum.com/hotels/no...ich/hotel.html

Hope all my research helps somebody else too! I should be a travel agent.

One of our best vacations was at NaBalam on Isla Mujeres near Cancun. It probably isn't $50 per nite, but very reasonable. Our family of 4 in high season was about $140. www.nabalam.com

Anywhere south of PDC would be nice. Akumal would have lots of variety. There are beach cabanas near Tulum that friends stayed in and enjoyed. I wouldn't worry about renting a car. There are lots of buses and collectivos on the highway to help get around- very cheap.

trevor
