Cancun rental car

We will be traveling in the Yucatan Peninsula ... from Cancun to Merida, then to Tulum and back to Cancun. Looking to rent a car for eight days. Prefer drop off at the airport. Have rented in Mexico before (but not in Cancun), and we plan to purchase highest level of insurance.

Any suggestions or recommendations for best auto rental agency at the airport?

My impression is that Cancun is now so thouroughly commercialized that the services at the airport are not really that much different than any other US airport, I think jsut getting the best deal on Travelocity or any other consolidator will be fine. I jsut did that for the week of (us) Thanksgiving and we used EZ Rent-a-car, and they were fine - Their facility is right on the turn off for the Merida highway.

I would not recommend Hertz at the Cancun airport as we had trouble. Be sure to get a total cost up-front including insurance before you take the car. However, friends recently used a local cancun airport agency and had good luck. Have a great trip!

williams - thanks for the link. Great prices. Have you used them before? Anyone?

feuerk - thanks for the tip - we've rented in Mexico a few times, and I know exactly what you mean about getting the total cost up-front before you take the car. And even then, if they know you have a flight to catch upon returning the car, we've had them try to add on extra fees thinking we'd be in too much of a rush to stick around and argue.

I checked the www.mexicocarsrental.com site and found that their prices are so low, they seem too good to be true. Price for an eight day rental of a compact car is less than a fifth the cost at other more mainstream sites (Avis, Hertz, etc).

I'm a little reluctant to give them my credit card info, since I have no idea who they are. Of course it could be on the up and up, but I can't seem to find any reviews or other info from other travelers who have rented from them.

Anyone?

(I'm going to repost this under its own topic line to see if anyone has heard of them)

Actually, I answered my own question on this one: I went ahead and completed the booking process for a car from them, and then was directed to a company called Blueway, which is the car provider. I guess mexicocarsrental.com is a consolidator of sorts.

Anyway, I did find a whole slew of very negative reviews about Blueway on TripAdvisor, so I cancelled the booking. I didn't ever have to give any credit card info, so no worries there.
