Cancun-Playa Del Carmen- Itinerary Need advise
My boyfriend and I are flying into Cancun October 30th for 1 week.
We are thinking about renting a car for the entire week.
Here is our tentative itineray
-Stay in Cancun first 2 nights
-Take ferry to Isla Mujeres and stay 1 night
-Drive down to Playa del Carmen stay 3 nights. Maybe take a side trip to Cozumel for the day. Maybe drive to visit the ruins one day.
Is this too much? We would have to probably drive back to Cancun Friday to return the car and spend our last night in cancun as our flight is at 8:00AM Saturday morning.
Also, is the rent a car safe in Cancun if we took the passenger ferry overnight to Isla Mujeres???
Thanks

I would not rent a car based on the trip you are describing.
Taxis are VERY cheap and rental cars are $40 to $50 per day. It's only about $40 bucks (less than $10 for the bus) to get a taxi to PDC, and you can relax and let someone else do the driving.
Parking and driving in both PDC and Cancun is nightmarish. Both are very easy to get around on foot.
If you were going to be driving all over the place and visiting remote areas and ruins, I'd suggest it.
I've done both and been all over the area, and for what you are doing, it's not worth the aggravation or money.

If you rent a car from the States before you leave, you can rent one for $25-$30 per day. Go online to car rental company's website. That is what my husband and I do everytime we go to Cancun. Cancun to Playa del Carmen is less than one hour driving. We always rent our own car and never have had any problems with parking or anything else. The streets are quite easy to navigate and there are not that many cars on the highways. There is plenty of parking at the ruins but make sure there is parking at the hotel you are staying at. Good luck.

I have to agree with others not to rent the car. Driving the highways are easy, but parking in PDC is crazy. It's so easy to walk around Playa. Same with Cancun. Streets are busy and buses and taxi's are easy to come by. I think it would be a waste of money to rent a car for what you want to do. You would waste a day just for Isla Mujeres. You being paying for the car rental and the day of parking at your Cancun hotel.

My husband and I are thinking about going at the same time...a few questions for you-
Did you find any good hotel deals?
Are you guys staying at AI hotel?
Where are you staying on Isla? I have heard mixed reviews about that place.
Have a wonderful time!

Thank you, pepper131 and everybody. In fact, the site
www.playadelcarmeninfo.com is fantastic.
I'll rent a car because I'll go to the ruins for a day (one day to Chichen Itza and Valladolid and the other to Cobá and Tulum).
By the way, this day (second) I think that there will be time to visit Cobá, Tulum and another place/beach. What do think about Play del Carmen, Playacar, Puerto Ventura or Puerto Morelos?

A couple of years ago we visited the ruins of Coba (rented bikes to get around faster) and Tulum (beach time here), then headed to Playa del Carmen for dinner at my favorite - Babe's on 10th St - all in one day. And we got a late start that day - around 10 or 11am from a hotel just north of PDC in Xcalacoco.
