Cancun in May 2002...anything for Cinco de Mayo?
 

My boyfriend and I have a trip booked to Cancun during Cinco De Mayo and are going to be staying at the Camino Real. Does anyone know if there is anything special going on during that time for the holiday? I heard it’s celebrated more in the US (like Texas, where we live, and they definitely celebrate here in Houston!) Or does anyone know of any cool sites that would give local event info on this holiday?<BR><BR>Also, we have been to Cancun a couple of times and are now looking for cool and different things to do in Cancun…out of the ordinary. You are correct, Cinco De Mayo is not celebrated in that part of Mexico, I believe the Puebla area may celebrate it. But I am sure that the there will be bars that will have some special things going on for Cinco De Mayo-the owners do know what the tourist want and I would think Cancun for sure , you will find something.

SHEILA, I agree with Monica, I was in Cancun last year during Cinco de Mayo & there really is no celebration in that part of Mexico.For something different to do try a tour to Contoy Island. Uninhabited island, bird sanctuary & beautiful beach where the sting rays actually swim up to you to be fed or petted.Have fun on your trip, I'll be there again the middle of May & can't wait!

I just came back from Cancun last week. It was my second trip to Cancun so I also looked for something different to do. This time I rented car and spent most of my time south of Cancun along the coast. I also spent two days/one night on a trip to Chichen Itza, Merida, Uxmal and Loltan cave and it was wonderful. As long as you stay on the main roads and highways, driving is abosolutely no problem. You'll find Mayans (especially outside Cancun) very friendly and helpful. If you like to swim in the ocean, you pretty much have to travel south as wave is strong around Cancun. You'll find calm ocean south of Cancun as the beach is protected by the reefs offshore.
