cancun ideas

visiting cancun for the first time and looking for ideas. which ruins would you visit on a day trip? any other "must do" activities? restaurants not to miss? the weather forecast is showing rain (30-60% chance) pretty much each day. is the rain like many tropical areas - showers daily and then sun the rest of day? thanks

Went there 2 years ago New YEars and had a wonderful time at a great little place called Club International outside of the Hotel Zone. Since we were "outside" of the action, we took some recommendations from this board and dined Downtown Cancun and had some incredibly memorable meals. The couple times we dined in the tourist areas were disappointing. Downtown we had a wonderful time and meal at LaParilla where we danced around the restaurant to live music & entertainers roaming around doing tricks for the kids. We even had a conga line that went out onto the sidewalk! We had our kids w/us (12 & 9) and they still talk about that place! It was crazy fun but ok for families and adults as well. We had another wonderful meal (w/o kids) at LaHabichuela. It was a beautiful setting out in a courtyard under trees w/little white lights. The food was excellent too.

We did no ruins. We did do a day trip to Isla Mujeres which we really enjoyed. Took a ferry and then rented a golf cart to tour the island completely. There were some really beautiful sights and gorgeous beaches.

Otherwise, we relaxed on the beach. We had no rain in January.

The weather forecasts are rarely accurate and the weather can change from area to area easily. It almost always calls for a chance of rain and you may have a shower or you may not. Usually they are short lived.

Chichen Itza is remarkable and I think it would be a shame to miss these ruins when you are so close. Easily done in a day trip on a comfortable tour bus. Tulum and Coba could be done in a day trip. Especially if you rent a car and do the driving yourself. However, Chichen Itza is the Best and biggest. Isla Mujeres is a fun day trip too--do both.

Chichen Itza is awesome...the largest, and has the most to see. On an Apple Vacation trip, we went to a cenote (sink hole) along with the package. It was well worth it. It was sooo beautiful!!!!!!
Tulum is on the water front. It is very scenic. And, the swimming there is fun with bigger waves.
Coba is large too. Lots to see, but I prefer Chichen!
We love snorkeling in Xel-Ha! That is pretty far travel from Cancun...probably one hour.
We went to Riviera Maya in July. We had the same % chance with rain. It was beautiful. It actually rained daily, but just went over and was finished in about ten minutes, back to sun and fun!
