Cancun for 40 somethings

My husband and I are traveling to Cancun at the end of June for the first time. We have read all about the partying and night clubs and are wondering if there are places to go where we can listen to music in a more relaxed environment? We are also wondering if the Cancun hotel zone is a good place for walking. We like to walk in the evenings and look at all the pretty resort hotels. Is there a walking path on the beach? I should probably mention that we are staying at the north end of the zone.

If you are looking for less of a party place, you might want to consider staying in Playa del Carmen (40 minutes south of Cancun). Many more Europeans go there and it has a charming pedestrian walking mall all along the downtown area.
In my opinion, it is very much nicer than Cancun.

I couldn't agree more I love PDC much better. You can rent a car and drive to the ruins or just go explore nearby towns!

Hi Seattlesue,
You can easily walk up the beach to view all the resort hotels! There is no path, just beach, though, and the beach sand is so fine, that it gets to be very good exercise after awhile!
The hotel I've always stayed at had nice music in the evenings, but not sure if they will since they'll just be opening again, the JW Marriott.
There is an over 40 club that might be quieter. I hope someone has a better answer for you! Have a wonderful time.

I've stayed in Cancun in my 40 somethings too and completely enjoyed it. Frankie is right, the beach walk is great exercise plus beautiful! I'm sorry, I don't know about music to listen to and relax. There are great places to eat everywhere, and your hotel may have something to offer. We always felt safe walking at night in the hotel zone. Have a great time. We are also going to be in MX the last wek in June, in the South near Playa del Carmen. Hopefully the weather will be good for all of us!!

Thank you for your replies. We've traveled to Mexico many times and have always enjoyed it. Being from Seattle we tend to visit the west coast, but have been to Cozumel several years ago. We are hoping to find some "local color" on this trip, but realize that Cancun is pretty Americanized. I ordered a map from "mapchick.com" and was happy to see listings of restaurants that are not part of a chain. We will try those smaller places and venture downtown at least once. Thanks again for your comments.

Cancun has some good restaurants downtown, it's definitely worth a trip! Try Las Habichuelas for a special occasion, and have the Mayan Coffee for dessert!

Just returned from Cancun and wanted to say thanks for the info before we left. We did walk on the beach and we felt very safe the entire time. We found a few good, reasonably priced restaurants and did a lot of relaxing by the pool. We went to La Habichuela on our last night and it was wonderful. We had the Mayan coffee and loved it as much as the presentation! Thanks again for your help!

Glad you like Habichuelas! Any other restaurants you could recommend?

We enjoyed Casa Tequila - the only place we ate at twice with the exception of the Deli-Mart across from our hotel (Krystal) where we had breakfast every day. Thought La Distilleria was fun, but a bit pricey. One place we tried in the club zone was the Taco Factory and their tacos were really good.
