Cancun - dolar or peso ?
Hello !
I'll be in Cancun in may, for my honeymoon. I live in Brazil, so I have to decide weather to buy US Dolar or Peso. It is easier here to buy US Dolar, but I'm afraid the conversion taxes in Cancun may be abusive. Can anybody help me with this issue ? Thanks ! Denise |
We were in the Yucatan in February and used both. Exchange rates varied from 10 to 11 Mexican pesos to the US dollar.
In Cancun it would be very, very rare to find anyone who would not accept dollars. However, one advantage to having some pesos is that many places that post prices in pesos will give you an "informal" rate of 10:1 if you use dollars. Since we had exchanged some of our dollars at 11:1, it was to our advantage to use pesos in these situations. A few pesos might be needed if you travel to small towns away from the tourist areas, but even then, most people will accept dollars. |
I would use my ATM card and withdraw pesos. I usually take no more than $100 USD with me and then rely on my ATM card to get cash while I'm away. I usually end up coming back with most of the $100.

My advice, use pesos--and get them with an ATM card.

The ATM idea is interesting, but the exchange rates for dollars here varies every day, and to get pesos at the ATM it is first converted from real (our currency) to dollar and then to peso. So, depending on the day the rate would be too high ! But I think I'll bring the ATM card anyway in case I spend more than I plan (which is very likely to happen) !
The exchange rate for dollar is very attractive at the moment, so I think I'll buy part in dollars and part in pesos, like "cdt" did. Thank you all for the help ! |
