cancun customs
I was planning to bring a couple loaves of homemade gluten free bread and pancakes in my checked luggage. Does anyone know if this will hold us up at customs? I am sure I will be able to find gluten free items after we get familiar with the area but I much prefer the homemade stuff. It's totally not worth it though if I get held up in customs. Seems like it's hit and miss with what is confiscated here. Sounds like the key is pretty much nothing fresh and anything else has to be in original package?

This is an interesting question. I assumed you could bring food into Mexico because for years the schools and churches in my area did donation drives but apparently there is some enforcement of rules in the past couple years.
You might want to you check out the SENASICA website. There is a link to it on the attached. http://www.bajabound.com/before/permits/agriculture.php |
I'd check a reputable site or the air lines but based on what they said on my recent trip to CUN, I'm afraid the answer may be "no".
Nothing that wasn't sealed in the original packing was allowed and that also included home baked goods because they are not labeled with ingredients. |
It's the fact that it is homemade that might trip you up at Mexican customs, not the fact that it is bread.

Thanks for your replies. I guess this just makes more room in my suitcase for some extra sandals....perfect! I will find a health food store in Playa del Carmen and make it work.

Probably wise. I've brought food that was neither sealed nor in its original packaging into Mexico before, but it was obviously leftover plane snacks, which may be why I got away with it.
