Cancun-Akumal transportation
 

Hi all
Heading out tomorrow and need some suggestions for transportation from Cancun airport to Akumal. We plan to stay in Akumal a few days and rent a car there. Is it better to reserve transportation-- bus, taxi, etc-- or choose when we get there?

Do NOT make arrangements inside the airport. The timeshare sharks will offer you reduced transportation in order to get you to the properties.

Wait until you get outside to arrange for transport, OR, take the bus, OR, make plans ahead of time with DITA.

We have always rented a car the 4 times we have been. Try Executive at the airport. Have a great time, Akumal is terrific.

You might consider renting a car from the get-go at the airport instead of using transfers down to Akumal. To me, the transfers are expensive and a car is well worth having every day of your trip.

Where are you staying in Akumal? The only way I am aware of to rent a car in Akumal is from the hotel desk through Playa del Carmen. They will send a driver to pick you up in Akumal, but you have to ride back with him to drop him off, then back to Akumal with your car. It reverses on turning the car back in. There may be another alternative, but after many trips there, I have not heard of one.

I agree that it would be cheaper and more convenient to rent at the airport.

However, if you don't, here is the system we used to get to Akumal:

Riviera bus from airport to Playa del Carmen (about $7 per person), then a taxi to our resort ($20 - negotiable).

This worked quite well and was less expensive than arranging a "transfer."
