We’re traveling in December and planning to fly in and out of Cancun, and rent a car at the airport to drive around in the Yucatan. To save time, we don’t want to fuss with shuttles to/from offsite car rental offices or lots, if at all possible. I can’t tell from the maps where the actual car pickup and dropoff locations are. Any recommendations for the closest/fastest rental car experiences? Any within walking distance of the airport (not sure which terminal we’re coming into - flying Southwest)? Reliable also, of course, but we’re happy to pay a little extra for piece of mind for catching our flight. Thanks!

Cancun airport has changed drastically in the past several years. With 3 terminals now working things have really improved. I do believe that one terminal is for Cargo and the other two are for public use which is national flights and international flights. In the past, you needed to shuttle into Cancun city to pick up your car. Now there are several car rental co. working out of the airport itself. I know that 3 years ago we dropped off our vehicle (rented in Playa with Avis) at the airport where they did the drop off inspection onto which we entered the terminal 2 for our departure to Canada. By the way, the rental kiosks are on your way out of the terminal where you need to make arrangements there so as to proceed for pick up on the airport grounds on your way out. Mind you, we have never picked up at the airport but have been to the rental companies area.for drop offs. We normally use the ADO bus line into Playa.. I do suggest that you make prior arrangements with rental agency on the Internet before flying over....As with all car rentals in Mexico, you will need to go through all the motions to make sure you get exactly what you want and at the price you want. Careful inspection and photos are strongly suggested before taking possession.
