Cancun airport

Is the red light still in effect at the airport in Cancun? If so, can a family of 6 get through with one push? If it were to turn red would all six of us have to get our luggage searched? Maybe it would be quicker to push it one at a time.

Yes, they still have the green light / red light system. But, being a family traveling together, you do not ALL have to push the button, and chances are, none of you will.

Ah yes, the infamous "red light."

It is so funny, they have finally finished this beautiful airport renovation at the Cancun AP, and those ratty old lights are still there.

Frankly, I think I would miss them if they took them out and came up with another method - it just wouldn't be the same without them.

In 25-30 trips through there, it caught us once. No problem...

Please be aware that the US State Department just issued a Travel Warning re: Cancun!!

What for - hurting your finger pressing the stoplight button in the airport? :)

How about a link or some more info?

mikemo: If you read the "warning" you'll see it's nonsense.

I was there earlier this month. They made each person press the button. There were 2 active lines at the time. I saw 3 red lights. Re 1/2 of a couple: I don't remember how much luggage of their luggage was searched.

here is a link
http://travel.state.gov/travel/mexico_announce.html

it is just to warn of possible street demos by local over some local political issues.....wise to read it.

I have always seen that each person pushed the button. I have rarely had the red light and when I did, it was very fast and easy.

caribtraveler Jul 29th, 2004 05:42 AM

We went through the airport in June. The light system was there. I was the only one to push the button (traveled with hubby and 2-year-old).

caribtraveler Jul 29th, 2004 05:43 AM

We got green by the way.

atlcty and curt,
While I'm sure the Dept of State is a bit paranoid, it would be unwise to ignore protests by local MX worker bees forced to live on peso wages in Ghettos just adjacent to USD dominated tourist "glitz".
One nice thing about SMdA, MX, while we have discordant housing and life styles, we live next door to one another, at least in the "Centro".
