Can you retrieve checked luggage on an overnight layover?
Flying from Manzanillo to Oregon with a 25 hour layover at LAX. Will they let you retrieve your luggage at LAX for the long layover or does it just get checked all the way through? Flight is on Alaska. Thanks!

Shouldn't be a problem just checking it to LAX, picking it up and then rechecking the next day to Oregon. Haven't flown Alaska in some time, but check their through-baggage policy. They may not even allow you to check it through on such a long layover.

Since you are entering the US from another country you will have to collect your luggage anyway to go through customs. Given that you are not making an immediate connection, you are unlikely to be able to check it all the way through to Oregon, but the airline which is taking you there from LAX will be able to tell you.

We have overnight layovers in Dallas most of the time when we return to the US from Belize. The bags are only checked through to Dallas. We have to go through check in and re-check bags the next day. That's on American, I'm guessing it's the same with other airlines.

Just ask that the bags to be checked only to LAX when you check in at Manzanillo (watch when they put the tags on the suitcases and make sure they say LAX).
(This may well be what the airline would do anyway, from the post above.)
