Can you fly direct to Cozumel from the US?

We need to know how the best way to get to Cozumel from the US. We are trying to decide between Cancun and Cozumel, and the travel time will make a difference in our decision. Thank you for the advice, Fodorites.

Almost any airline or charter that fly into Cancun also fly into Cozumel. I have even seen real good deals into Cozumel.

I guess it would depend where you are coming from. Here in Dallas, there are equal numbers of flights to both and the time differential is probably just minutes; both are under a two hour flight. Really, they're so close that flight time shouldn't be an issue. The only thing I would recommend is, know where you want to stay before picking your flight. If you are staying in Cozumel, you don't want to fly into Cancun, but if you are staying in Playa del Carmen or Tulum or somewhere else on Riviera Maya, it might be just as easy to fly into Cozumel and take the ferry over as opposed to the more crowded airport in Cancun.

Where are you located? Northwest Airline flies non-stop from Minneapolis, Continental flies non-stop from Houston, many charter companies fly non-stop from various cities. I know you can get there from Miami. Give us a bit more information. Also, there is a big difference in the "feel" of Cozumel vs. Cancun. What do you want to do once there? Cancun is more "party" while Cozumel is a more layed back "dive" town. Hope we can help.

Catherine, wait! I'd double check some of these guys' answers. I have been travelling to Cozumel for years and the only direct service has long been Continental's Houston-Cozumel service.

The old Dallas-Cozumel (American) and Miami-Cozumel (Mexicana) had stopped years ago and recently I've had to go via Cancun. Through Cancun there's lots of service but I'd try to get via Houston if you can.

If you want a quick travel time, Cancun is definately the way to go there are lots of direct flights. It really depends what kind of place you are looking for, Cozumel is smaller Cancun bigger and more flashy.

Thank you for the advice so far. Some of us are flying from Chicago and others from Austin, TX. There seems to be a large discrepency on flight costs and travel time. There are several small children in our party, so we are always looking for least amount of travel time and fewest connections. And, of course, price.

Catherine, i don't know if MLT serves austin and chicago, but that is where i have found the best prices into both cozumel and cancun. (we flew into cancun this summer for $180 from DFW, and I've seen cozumel for about the same) They have a website _not sure on address, maybe mltvacations.com? _ and you can book online there.

I do think you shouldn't base your decision just on travel time, if possible. they are such different places, and people who love one of them often hate the other.

Many airlines only run flights to Cozumel during high season. This is why one might think that flights from Miami, etc have been cancelled. They do not fly during low season. This will also greatly influence your price. A ticket on MLT for $180 "this summer" will not be available for the winter high season. Last season the MLT fares to Cozumel were around $500 (depending on your origination point) unless you're willing to wait until the very last minute and search for a "fire sale". Try contacting Apple Vacations. They have some package deals to Cozumel. If you have small children in your group, I would definately recommend Cozumel over Cancun. You might want to consider a large house to rent or condos with children's activities on sight.

For Michelle: We stay in Cozumel every winter for a month and fly every year with Northwest Airline on a non-stop flight from Minneapolis into Cozumel. There are also at least two charter companies here who fly non-stop into Cozumel. We have friends who join us and fly non-stop from Miami every February and others who fly NON-STOP from Toronto, while some do fly from Houston. I don't know where you originate your flights, but there are direct flights - during high season, not in the off season. Hope this makes your traveling easier.
