Can we tour Tulum ruins on our own?

We are going to Cancun in two weeks and want to tour the ruins at Tulum. We won't have a car.

I have been researching tours and saw one hat includes a tour of the ruins and swimming at Xel-Ha. But I was curious as to whether we could just take a bus to Tulum and explore on our own. I thought there might be bikes to rent in Tulum that we just use to get around.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes you can take the bus and just walk around on your own.

You can climb some of them and look out at the Caribbean Sea....terrific!

The Tulum site is rather small. I've been there a few times and never had a tour.

Yes. I would siggest an hour of pre-reading is all you need to fully appreciate them. You can tour them in about 1 to 1 1/2 hours max.

Thanks, everyone. That sounds great. I think we will just take a bus, then. Is anything else near the ruins, like a restaurant or store within easy walking distance where we could buy a snack or cold drink?

A couple of ruins are now roped off to climbing, but you can still walk around to the front of the main pyramid (oceanside). There's a little complex of tourist shops at the entrance, but you should bring your own bottle of water. BTW, I find the walk from the ticket kiosk to the gate (~1/3 mile, mildly uphill) in the humidity and heat a wee bit draining, depending on the season and time of day; the small price for a ride up the road is a great deal (leaving and walking downhill is no problem).

There are several restaurants on the Tulum beach road that are within walking distance of the ruins. La Vita Bella and Mayan Grill are tasty, inexpensive, and have great views.

In June last year EVERY ruin in Tulum was roped off. You could only observe them from the walkways. Regardless, still worth a visit. If you want to visit ruins where you are free to climb all over, including the large pyramid go to Coba, about 50-60 kilometers west of Tulum.

Roped off is good. When I was there, there were 100s of Italians in bathing suits from a cruise ship lounging all over the ruins. No way to get them out of the pictures!
