Calling home from CR

What are my chances of getting in a phone call home to Canada every now and again? We are investigating getting our cell phone unlocked so that we can go the way of a CR sim card. However, failing that, what are the options? ( phone availability/cost..etc )

Thanks in advance!

My husband got an international phone plan for his cell phone.

Just an FYI for others, we recently stayed at Nayara and were surprised to see that they offered free phone calls back to the US.

If you have a smartphone you can sign up with Skype and call right from your phone with wifi.

You can buy a sim card for $5.00 and some will give you international calls included! As volcanogirl said some hotels will offer you free international calls.
Hope this helps!

It is all helpful, many thanks! I got my hands on an unlocked phone that takes a SIM card. Is it best to grab the required card(s) at the airport upon arrival or is there a better/cheaper option. ( as you may have determined I am trying to keep my costs down! )

Our unlocked gsm phone died, so we have been using Skype calling with the computer to the US. Not the video Skype which is free, but a phone call subscription which cost about $3 for 60 minutes in a month. Works great if you have a computer w/you.
