Cabo San Lucas driving safety

Is it safe to drive around Cabo San Lucas and the lower Baja Penninsula? You hear many stories about the local drivers.

Thank you

Yes, it's OK. What stories do you hear? I don't think the problem is 'local drivers' so much but some of the road conditions (some people prefer to stick with driving in the day time).

We were in this area in November during Thanksgiving. Traveling to Todos Santos from airport in Cabo is 2 lane oncoming traffic, the road was fine. The roads within Cabo are ok, but just beware of stop signs and bumps that may not be clearly marked to the non locals. I think we saw 3 different signs that marked a bump and some NOT marked.

We also travelled the road from Todos Santos to La Paz which was under construction for a short distance, but was generally 2 lane each way (4 lane).

Both cities La Paz and Cabo had times when traffic was more prevalent, but nothing worse than the states. GPS was handy as roads aren't marked clearly and not set up in a grid necessarily. Round abouts and bumps. Also beware of the other guy. Most of the time the locals were more than friendly in offering help when lost and also yielded to us foreigners.

On the road to Todos Santos, you may run into drivers who tend to pass. We just slowed down and took our time and didn't try to be anxious about passing when not sure what was ahead on the highway.

Have fun, it is a great place and we thoroughly enjoyed are trip to Baja area.
