Buenos Aries hotel
 

My husband will be by himself for three nights in BA. He is a tourist so will want to be "downtown" if possible. There is a good rate at the Sheraton, which I know will be sterile, but comfort will be important to him rather than cute. Anybody want to warn us away from that? Thank you all.

If you get a good rate at the Sheraton I do not see any harm in it. Location is ok. You probably need to take taxis when getting back to the hotel at night.
Get the number of a good taxi radio companies, like
Pidalo Taxis 4956 1200 and 4932 2222
Alo Taxi 4855 0455
and use them. Avoid if the hotel wants to put you in expensive remises or rental cars.

There are 2 Sheratons more or less in the downtown area of Buenos Aires. The Sheraton Libertador on Cordoba and Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center on San Martin.

I am sure I read something in a forum - just not sure which one - comparing the two and telling which was better. Maybe Dr. Dawggy can help.

We stayed at the Sheraton Buenos Aires for two weeks this past summer and liked it very much. It was extremely conveniently located, and the beds were very comfortable. There were a lot of pilots and flight attendants there, also a couple of conventions, but it was quiet and comfortable, and the staff accommodating and helpful. Starwood preferred guests have the usual breakfast and cocktails with a great view of the city. I recommend it. We got taxis at the hotel, and they were cheap. Also, we walked to and from the hotel to many of our destinations.

On that note - if not staying at the sheraton, any suggestions?

Perhaps the bobo or the home boutique hotels..

Sorry, I have to disagree with realoc. I stayed at the Home Hotel and absolutely loved it, but I don't think it fits the poster's requirements. Home is not "downtown" and the emphasis there is more on style, which I think the husband doesn't care that much about!

my wife and I stayed at the Marriott across from Plaza San Martin in 2002 and were very happy with it. It is close to the Sheraton Convention Center but a much smaller hotel. It is right across from the entrance to Avenida Florida so it provides a lot of shopping in the area. Try to get a room that faces the park.

I hope you went with the Sheraton Convention Center and not the Sheraton Libertador. There are several downtown hotels I would recommend over the Libertador, with the Regal Pacific at the top of the list.

the incentive of a good deal is a good choice in my opinion.

Your right skatedancer, wrong neighborhood stylishly speaking. We also stayed at the Regal Pacific, thanks to Dr. D and other regulars...and a very nice location, well priced at the time and wonderful rooms....electric drapes as I recall..

The sofitel is very nice, the Hyatt is very well located (in Recoleta) but quite expensive, both Faena and Hilton are in a trendy area (Puerto Madero) but far away from the action.

I just returned from South America 2 days ago.

I stayed at the Sheraton Covention Centre and had a lovely room facing the Clock Tower and the Park.

You will like this place.
You are within walking distance to Florida Street ( as has already been mentioned).

To go to Florida Street you have to walk right past the San Martin Park.

Walk in here and see the lovely monument of San Martin and the trees that are all in bloom...some like the Cherry Blossom in Washington DC!

You are also walking distance from the July 9th Avenue.
The widest avenue in the world with 20 lanes.!!( They used to have 30 lanes).

It is called the July 9th Avenue because Argentina won it's independence onJuly 9th 1816

There is an Obelisk in the centre of this avenue.

If you do walk all the way down Florida Street you will come upon Plaza de Mayo..........a lovely square and you will see the Pink Place where Eva Perron used to preach from the upper Balcony.

The square is surrouned by lovely buildings including a Catherdal...walk in here , it is free and lovely inside.

For other tourist places perhaps you might want to take a taxi or hire a tour guide for the day.

Buenos Aires is a very nice place..I could live there.

Oh yes, you must see a Tango show or at least see them doing the Tango on Florida Street.

I've stayed at several downtown hotels. Here's my opinion of each:

1. Sheraton Convention Center: Huge impersonal hotel. Very nice, quiet rooms. Lovely breakfast often included. Impersonal. Not my taste. Be mindful of the park across the street, esp. on weekends (when it is frequented by pickpockets). If you think a bird has pooped on you - do not accept help. The helper is robbing you.
2. Hilton Puerto Madera - Great walking location. Less convenient to the "true" downtown area. Getting to be very expensive - overpriced mediocre restaurants. This area has become way too touristy since I started coming in 2000. It used to be a favorite.
3. Sofitel Puerto Madeira - noisier, more remote. Wouldn't recommend this.
4. Marriott (near where Florida hits the Park). My favorite. Cheaper, smaller, lovely building, great location. European feel. Downsides to this hotel are the noise (not bad - but a bit more than the Hilton or Sheraton - Sofitel is also noisy). It is the cheapest (for me - I come on business and pay a corporate rate). It also includes an acceptable breakfast in many rates.

Hi forgot to mention the Hyatt in Recoleta. When I stayed there it had just converted to a Four Seasons. This was during the financial crisis (late 2001) and it was very cheap. I liked it - lovely neighborhood, quiet, wonderful breakfast, very friendly staff. It's the upscale part of downtown. I think by now it probably more expensive. And it was getting a bit shabby (in a nice way ... ). I assume by now it may be redone and is probably expensive.

The Hyatt is now the luxurious Park Hyatt which has been reopened for less than a year. The rates are high.

Yes, I asked my team at lunch about the new Hyatt. I hear it is very lovely. And very expensive.

No one has talke pesos. What is a good rate?
