Buenos Aires queeries

Checking into Park Chateau Kempinski in Buenos Aires in a few days. Anyone been there lately? On-line pix look nice but I've read that lots of high-end hotels tend to be worn out, musty, etc. so I'm not expecting much.
Also - never having been to S.America,I'm a tad concerned about safety. What's with all of the pedestrian deaths by auto? And armed robbery on the streets during the day is common? What is the real story? I don't plan to walk down dark alleys at night, but what is the real situation down there, say in Recoleto? Perfectly all right, or a bit iffy?
Lastly - What is the top one or two things you'd recommend doing/seeing in that area? What's not to be missed?!?
Appreciate your input.

There is no need to worry about being killed by a passing car, armed robberies are not common. The situation is not perfectly all right but all in all Buenos Aires is not a dangerous city. The district you name is called Recoleta. If you need to take a taxi call a radio taxi so that you know who the driver is. Should you have any inconvenience you can contact the Tourist Police Station which is located at 436 Corrientes Avenue. Their toll-free number is 0800-999-5000.

Mr. Barchi: Wow! Talk about info coming right from the source . . . thanks for the advice & phone numbers. I'll tell you, I've never read so many conflicting stories about a city. Books, and recent travelers, either rave about how in Recoleta (thank you)women & children can walk anywhere, day & night in perfect serenity. There are just as many stories about how unbelieveably dangerous the whole city is. Very odd.

There is neither perfect serenity nor extreme danger. I would say that the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I though this would be a query about gay hangouts in BA.
