Buenos Aires: Men in Shorts??
We will be in Buenos Aires the first two weeks of November. My husband is wondering if men typically go around the city in shorts, either nicer ones with loafers and a collared shirt or sporty ones? We will be mainly in the nicer areas such as Recoleta and Palermo.

During the first two weeks of November, it should not be too warm in BA. The first two weeks of January would be a different matter.
That said, your husband certainly can wear shorts. However, no locals will be wearing shorts, unless they are jogging. What I mean is that it is fine, but it will be obvious he is a tourist. If he doesn't mind, great! You and your DH will have a great time in our town, with or without shorts. |
Thanks, you really answered my questions!!
I had seen on weather reports that it was already getting warm there but it is good to have a local's perspective. |
My husband has one more clothing question: do men usually wear jackets and ties to dinner in nice places?
|
Well, LA, your DH should be OK almost anywhere with a nice shirt and slacks, but in a few places would look even better with a jacket on. I don't think that in this day and age any place in BA demands a tie. He can bring one, JIC, since it doesn't require much space to pack one. Then, when you reserve, ask about the dress code.
Another way to answer to your question would be the following: Only for a business dinner. In other words, I feel it depends more on the company than on the kind of restaurant. |
Another thing, LA: stop worrying about dress codes. You'll have a great time in our country, period.

Thanks again!
We have only been concerned b/c we were told that it is a much more dressed up city than in Los Angeles where we live where you can go to the finest places in jeans. |
I just returned from BA a few hours ago.We were also mainly in Recoleta and Palmermo. There were no men in shorts.
But, in other regards I was rather surprised to see that people (especially men) were not always dressed so nicely. Yes, in some nice restaurants there were men in coat and tie. But, there were also Portenos in jeans. LosAngeles90004, I don't live that far from you...I am in San Jose, California. In BA, seems to me that "anything goes". I totally agree with avrooster. As with your hubby, I considered packing a jacket and tie. I am glad I didn't. But I am glad I did pack a nice shirt and slacks.. |
Thanks for the advice both of you.

I would apply the same dressing standarts that are in vogue in let us say Paris...
|
I just returned today, I saw a wide range of clothing, though only a few men in shorts. It was warm during the day but mornings and nights were nippy. I saw a lot of jeans and slacks, nothing particularly dressy.
