bringing food to CR?
We would like to bring a reasonable amount of snacks and packaged foods to costa rica, i.e., pre-cooked bacon, tuna pouches, cheese, peanut butter, nuts. Does anyone know if customs will allow this? How to proceed? Thanks!

Customs won't be a problem. It is mostly fresh foods like fruits, veggies, and live plants that they worry about. Check out some of the bigger grocery stores down there. I think you will find many of the things you hauled down. Don't know about the bacon or tuna pouches.
Make sure everything can be sealed up very tightly because ants can be a problem. |
Traveling with 4 kids I made sure I brought plenty of snacks with me on both trips to CR. I had a whole carry on bag filled with pre-packaged snacks, PB&J & pop tarts. I'm sure I could've bought some of it there but it was a lot more convenient to have it with me from the start. I had no problems with customs.

We brought snacky stuff like that . It was all well sealed , plus I put them in large ziplock bags . I also take grocery bags balled up to stuff in my back pack for garbage .

We took some snacks like granola bars, etc., but found it more fun to go into the grocery stores and see what they had. The big stores "supermercados" have almost anything that you want, and the smaller stores are like our 7-11's with plenty of snacks and cold drinks. Diet Coke is called Coca Light if you're a Diet Coke addict like I am. It doesn't taste exactly the same, but it's fine and says no sugar, no calories on the label. Try the mom and pop stores along the road. They're lots of fun to go in and look around.

I know fresh fruit can be a problem, but will they let us in with dried fruit? We have a favorite trail mix that has dried strawberries, mango, pineapple, etc.

Only sealed stuff . In original store sealed package .
