Bringing clothes and fabric to Puerto vallarta
 

I have a pile of gently used clothing and good sized fabric remnants that I am sure someone in PV can use. Can anyone tell me where to take them or who to contact. We are going at the end of October.

I wouldn't bother with the remnants, we have several economical fabric stores here.
If the clothing is for children you might contact Casa Hogar or R.I.S.E. which are both Children Shelters.

Adult clothing is not needed, everyone resells used clothing here very cheaply.

You should find an agency that actually needs it before you haul all that down to Vallarta. Lots of things people think would be needed locally, simply aren't. I know at one orphanage they have an overabundance of baby clothes that have been donated, when what they really need is diapers, formula, etc.

It's a nice gesture but perhaps not the most useful to locals in PV.

You clearly mean well, but I don't understand why you think hauling these clothes to PV makes sense. I think it would make more sense to donate the items at home and make a monetary donation to a charity in Mexico, or to an international charity that does work in Mexico.

(A little known fact is of how little practical use clothing really is. American castoffs overwhelm the world's charities, t-shirts being the worst of the worst. Most get recycled. Read this:

That said, contact your hotel or timeshare management office for ideas, if you still want to bring the clothes.

You can check in on the Trip Advisor Puerto Vallarta forum. There's a very active group of posters, frequent visitors, and some who live there full-time, including Cabron and myself.

There are many people who regularly do charitable work in PV (recently there was a project painting a building at the orphanage). But bringing clothes isn't what's needed.

In my city, donated clothes do the most good when they are sold at thrift shops to people who can afford them, and the proceeds put to charitable use. Random clothing in random sizes can't really be used anywhere, however generous the intention.

Too bad that your not in the Yucatan area,(PDC)where it is popular to take used clothing to the library where it will then be distributed to the right people. I also know of people taking their clothes to animal shelters for cats and dogs. The clothes is sold off and the monies go towards the care of these animals. Coco's cat rescue, for instance is well known in PDC for such undertakings. Used clothing can go a long way in Mexico if you know where to take it. I also happen to know a Mexican lady who does a lot of work from her home on her sewing machine for anybody who needs it, and at a good price. When she altered a new dress for my girlfriend she asked if she could keep the remnants. I am convinced that there are such goings on in PV also, I guess it's a matter of who you know...

Thanks everyone - I won't bother and will just do what I usually do at home which is donate it to a local hospital thrift store.
