BPM Festival make Playa del Carmen crowded?

We were hoping to be in PDC from January 4 through January 11. Will we notice that the BPM festival is going on by way of noise and crowds? Should we plan to go elsewhere in Mexico just because of that?

Thanks!

I have a condo in PDC. I rent it from December through April, but my condo manager has told me about the BPM festival during the last few years. She has told me that the festival is pretty crazy time, and the young people who attend stay up all night partying. But that said, my condo rents for the entire month of January to middle aged Canadians who have never complained or even commented about the BPM festival.

Usually festivals of any kind anywhere are going to be crazy. They may not directly affect where you are staying, but will probably affect things outside of your room like dining options, bars, activities, etc. because of large crowds.

Janauary is already a pretty costly time to vacation anywhere as it's the start of high season. Add in a festival or other attraction that targets crowds and prices for accomendations usually double or triple in price.

There is a popular music festival on the beach in Playa at Mamitas beach at Thanksgiving and we have never noticed any surge of people in town then the two times we have been there at Thanksgiving.

But I just read that BPM brought 35K people to Playa in 2012!!! That is a huge amt over the normal population of just over 100k and the usual tourists on top of that.

I've had the misfortune of being in Playa during BPM twice now. Avoid if humanly possible is all I can say!

The beaches, the town, the hotel and condos are jammed. They leave the place covered with trash and the noise......? Thumpa Thumpa Thumpa at ear drum shattering volume quite literally all night long. One year we almost had to relocate from our condo since the noise got so loud, we could not even have a conversation in our living room.

Many locals I know leave during that time.

If you've never been to Playa before, please don't come during BPM. It's an otherwise wonderful location that I revisit often and highly recommend but never during BPM.

My condo is pretty far up in the north end of Playa at Coco Beach and is a block off the beach, so perhaps that is why the renters for the month of January have not every commented on the noise from BPM. 35K people at that festival is a LOT of people for Playa.
