Bosque del Cabo in October

I posted a few questions about BdC in the last week or so. After reading the replies, we have decided to stay at BdC for the full seven days of our trip (excluding a night each for arrival and departure in San Jose) instead of splitting it up between several different lodges.

My question this time is timing. October would be the very best time for both of us to be away from work, but from all that I've read, that is the height of the rainy season. I don't mind staying in every afternoon, or getting wet on the way to dinner, but I do have concerns over the shape the trails (and the road) will be in from all the rain. Say, there is a toad strangler rain the afternoon and evening before, would the trails be rough going and miserable the next morning? Would certain ones be impassable?

I've heard that it is cooler during this time. Is this true? Also, since it's October, could that possibly mean we would be the only guests around? Maybe that's a question I should ask the folks at BdC.

Our second choice on timing would be the week preceding Thanksgiving. If any of you regulars had your choice, which would you pick? October or mid-November?

Any other tips any of you want to give about going during the green season? Our plans are to mostly stay around the lodge and do the trails, plus lay around a lot.

Any input would be appreciated!

I would not go to Osa in October. I just wouldn't. Every single activity is outdoors and for me I would much prefer to go to the Caribbean side around Puerto Viejo and up to Tortuguero. Sorry to be so negative, this is coming from someone who's favorite place is Osa, but unless I absolutely had no other choice I would either go a different time of year or to a different area. My travel time and savings is much to precious to spend a week in the rain.

Thank you for your honest input. What do you think about November? About the same?

The closer you can get to December the better. ;-)

I would not go in October either. I asked Phillip, one of the guides there about traveling there in October since we had considered it, and his exact words were something along the lines of, "What kind of idiot would do that?!" Those of you who have met him can imagine his saying it! He said that he usually leaves the property during September and October because it can rain for days. Some of the property can even go under water.

Mouse over Puerto Jimenez on this map, and you'll get an idea of what he's talking about.

I agree!
October = Rain, Rain and more rain.
However, it is an awesome time to volunteer for sea turtle conservation projects on the Osa. Olive Ridley and Green Turtle mamas love to lay their eggs on a rainy night in October. It's pretty cool to experience their magic...

but, it's your holiday, and I'm sure you want some sunshine...
