Border closing Puerto Viejo to Panama- any info?

We're supposed to be taking a shuttle with our young son next week from Puerto Viejo to Panama. I've just learned that there are political related riots going on on the Panama side and that the border is currently closed. I'm considering booking a flight from San Jose at this point, as I'm concerned about safety, even if the border reopens. Any thoughts?

When traveling internationally, reference http://travel.state.gov

You can also find embassy contacts there. It looks like it is just on the West Coast that there are problems. But always check before and during your stay, in order to play it safe.

BTW, where are you going to stay in PV?

Thanks for the info.. The warnings for the boat ride do not seem too ideal for a 4 year old- very wet and possible big swells. May just stick with a flight to play it safe. 4deckers, we plan to stay at El Nido Cabinas.

You would be wise to book a flight, though the government opened the road again this weekend. For sure the the Idigenous group will do as they did before and re-block this highway. They have a right as last year the government promised them that their lands would not be included in a new mining laws, but of course big money talks and they will keep fighting this bill. So be safe as they can strike at any point and book a flight, it's a pity because this is a really wonderful drive down through the country.
Panama is an amazing country so don't let this spoil your trip here. Good Luck
