bohemian getaway

I am planning on taking a trip to Tulum with my girlfriend this summer. We are both students so we are looking for inexpensive places to stay. We would love a small villa on the beach or even camping is fine. We just want to be around natural beauty, swim, eat , meditate, relax....no crowds. We want to stay for at least 3 weeks and visit any and all beautiful, peaceful places. Any suggestions. Thanks, Adam

Casa Cenote in Tankah, near Tulum, is a thatched-roof, open-air bar and restaurant on the beach. It is a casual, remote, fun spot.

Casa Cenote also rents very small villas on the beach. They may not fit into your budget, but they include meals.

Regardless, don't miss Casa Cenote. Have a beer and a fish dinner. Spend the day. And bring your swimsuit.

You'll love it.

Greg,

Casa Cenote sounds like exactly what I have been searching for. I really want to stay on the Carribean coast but I'm afraid it is getting to crowded with high rollers.

Thanks for the info

Adam

I forgot to mention that you can find them at casacenote.com.

Have a great time.

hi, we checked out casa cenote last summer and while i agree the restaurant is a great place to eat and hang out, i thought they wanted a lot of money for their little cabanas _ seems like $100US a night for a small room, if i remember correctly. We stayed at the tankah dive inn alittle farhter down the beach, which was still somewhere around $65 night. I like Tankah a lot, and the beach is great, but i think your money will go farther if you stay in tulum, probably either in one of the sets of cabanas right by the architectural site or the ones father down on the road to punta allen.

you also might check out paamul, where ou used to be able to camp and i think they even rented little rvs for a while. this is the place where the sea turtles are.

in any event, there are still a few places along the yucatan coast that sounds like it will meet; your needs, though just a warning, the area is developing very rapidly and it is harder to find the really cheap places that were there even a few years ago. some of my favorite little beaches now have big resorts on them!

texas,

Just what I expected. It was 5 years ago when I had first heard about Tulum and its natural beauty. But, as it looks now things are changing and becoming over developed.

Thanks for the suggestions because 100 bucks a night is way to much for us.

Adam

adam, good luck on finding a place. i do have a couple other suggestions:
boca paila, farther down on the punta allen road, is supposed to be nice, though i haven't been that far myself. i heard mixed reports on Xcalak which is way down on the border with belize. My understadning is that in the summer you might find something for $30-60 a night in both places, but i think you can probably find something around Tulum for that as well. But the days of the $10 cabana are pretty much gone, i think.

good luck; we're trying to find a cheap flight to yucatan ourselves this summer and if we get one, we'll do more research on the cabana front!

Have you posted this on lonely planet as well? that board seems to have a lot more budget travelers than this one.

You could also consider Isla Mujeres or Isla Holbox. Certainly many rooms at both places for under $25. Isla Mujeres has a youth hostel for around $8. We have a brouchure on Isla Mujeres and surrounds that we would gladly e-mail you on request. dan and ginny
