Blackbird Caye/Lighthouse Reef

Hello!

We're thinking of taking a trip with the Oceanic Society to snorkel at Blackbird Caye/Turneffe Atoll/Lighthouse Reef.

As I said, we're snorkelers, not divers. For anyone who has been there, is the snorkeling from shore okay? I know we will travel to spots by boat as well.

Thanks for your help!

Pam

fabulous snorkeling, great island-very diversified flora/fauna for its size, great kayaking, ask about the crocs before you jump into the water in certain places and at night.

Katie,

Crocs!!!! Hmmmm...I may have to investigate this a bit more.

I was excited to learn that we might be able to see manatees, which has always interested me.

Regards,

Pam

Crocs should be on the back side of the lagoon, but Blackbird Resort feeds them at night on their front dock, so like I said, ask before you jump. and don't feed the animals...kt

For anyone familiar with both areas, how would this area compare to Roatan for snorkeling from the shore?

Can't compare the two. Blackbird is in Turneffe atoll, which is in itself spectacular. The Blue Hole is included on the 4 and 7 night packages and that is a fascinating sink hoe 1000 ft wide and 400 ft deep. Lots less human and fishing pressure out at BB than you would find anywhere along Roatan, so its in much better shape than anythign with a high population density nearby.
