Best time to visit Belize?
 

We are planning a trip to Belize next year. We could go anytime from late June through the fall. How late in the season would be workable, while minimizing the chance of hurricane weather? Also, we will have a one week timeshare on Ambergis Caye...would 3-4 nights in the jungle be sufficient in addition to this? Thanks!

Peak month for tropical storms and hurricanes in the western Caribbean is September, followed by October.

Of course, the U.S. (especially the Carolinas, Florida and the Gulf Coast) gets far more hurricanes than Belize.

We just returned a few days ago from a week long visit to Ambergris Caye. Weather was great, as long as you like it hot. Unplanned benefit was being there for Belize Independence Day. (September 21) Downside was that it really is the slow season and multiple restaurants were closed all or part of the time that we were there.

In 2003 we were there in June. Almost as hot, but everything was open.

Natalie, anytime after May, you take a risk of a Hurricane, but the later you go, (late August through October), the higher the chance. Being an east coast resident, I have tracked Hurricanes for years. National weather forecasts and trends show that most Hurricanes do not reach Latin America, but are diverted north towards Southern US, but some do squeek by. Make your plans and have fun. If you are really concerned, buy travel insurance in case you have to cancel or postpone your trip. Also, many hotels will not charge you a fee if you have to cancel your reservations, just determine that beforehand and keep your eyes on the weather channel. You may also have drier weather in earlier summer than later on, another thing to consider.

Natalie; The input you have is on the mark. Avoid mid-Aug.-Nov.1st. It is 5 degrees or so warmer in late July than in May to mid-June. The interior can be really more humid in late July and August.This is based on 4 trips in the past 10-11 years.
Four days in the interior at a lodge is ideal. Don't expect much more than some ruins and lots of species of birds and some monkeys and sloths.

No slouths in Belize. And they are cute, aren't they?

Katie, On a trek about 50 miles from the border with Honduras in the north the trees were filled with them on my last visit in 2002. Maybe some infestation occurred and they took off for Costa Rica.

In Toledo district? Fascinating. Live and learn. Which area? I'll be down that way next week and have a few days I can play in the bush and will look for them. In the Bladen, near Little Quartz ridge?
