Shopping in Panama is great. If you have the time and opportunity go to El Valle on a Sunday and hit the marketplace. The market is open most days; but, Sunday has always seemed the most active day for trading. In Panama City, I love Solomon's for linens.
The craft market in the Balboa area of the former Canal Zone has a wide range of goods from all over the country.
Enjoy your visit. Panama is a gorgeous country.

Multiplaza Pacific - very new, lots of name brand stores on the pricey side for Panama
Multicentro - almost 2 years old, not as many name brands, more stuff from South America, still empty shops, not as pricey
Albrook Los Pueblos - near domestic airport and bus stations - caters to lower end so good bargains in the larger stores
Los Pueblos - large open shopping center - one of the first big ones, lots of variety and good prices
Avenida Central - the cheapest shopping in Panama along a pedestrian mall - okay during the day just don't be flashy with jewelry or money

Cheers,
Andrew

I am primarily interested in good quality crafts, as well as some inexpensive ones as gifts for kids. I plan to go to the market in Balboa. Is the Sunday market in El Valle worth a special trip if I have been to Balboa? The guide books describe it as small.

Not worth a special trip, you will see all the same things at the market in Balboa and at similar prices - bargain hard!!!
Just up the street from the Balboa market is the Kuna mola market which is also worth stopping at - 10 minute walk - 2 minutes in a car, up the hill on the same side of the street.

You cna slso hit Gran Morrison stores if you forgot something - more pricey but handy.

Cheers,
Andrew
