Best Amazon Lodge?
 

Hi,

I am traveling to the Amazon in August and I wanted to know which lodge you think is the best and why. If you have travelled to the Amazon and stayed in a lodge, please recommend! Thanks!

What part of the Amazon? The Amazon river basin covers half of South America, and includes Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, etc.
I've been to the Peruvian Amazon but that won't help you if you will be in Brazil.

If you're going to Brazil, I can recommend one - We stayed in the Amazon Lodge about 4 hours away from Manaus and thought it was wonderful. Probably a bit more basic and a lot smaller than the Ariau Towers (so I understand), but we felt that really added to the experience - you don't go to the jungle to experience luxury!

We've been to the Peruvian Amazon 3 times and stayed at the Amazonia Expeditions lodge on the Tahauyo River. It's wonderful, and we're headed back there again this year (in August), this time to have my son do his Eagle Scout Project.

Amazaonia Expeditions is based in the U.S., which gave me some additional comfort the first time we headed into this previously unknown region to us.

They offer fabulous guides and staff, nice, although not luxurious, accommodations, great food, and lots and lots of adventure activities from which to choose!

Highly recommend this company and their lodge.

In Sept of 2001, we traveled on the Amazon Clipper out of Manaus. It is a small boat with 4-5 "cabins". It was rustic and wonderful. The biologist/captain spoke several languages and was a good host. Great fun. We met the indigenous people and ate the local food. After that we stayed at the Hotel Tropical before going to the Ariau. I could have stayed at the Ariau for weeks and weeks. We were there during 911 and everyone went out of their way to be kind to us. When we arrived (by boat, of course), we could see the employees lined up and waving to the boat to welcome us. As we got closer, we could see that most of the "employees" were monkeys - waving and waiting to visit us. The monkeys made the trip. They were curious thieves who sat on our laps and tried to steal our beer. One black monkey in particular fell in love with my husband. He hung on him almost the entire stay. The birds also were everywhere - even a parrot in the toilet.
