Belize / which ruins to see?
 

We will be traveling to Ambergris in February. Interested in the ruins. Please give your opinions. Also did you go to Tikal ruin? How did you get there, and what price range was that tour?

Xunantunich <BR>Caracol <BR>Altun Ha <BR>Lamanai <BR>Lamanai and Altun Ha are easiest to reach from San Pedro. <BR>Tikal is in Guatemala not Belize but there are day tours a few times a week from San Pedro. Make arrangements when you get there it will be much cheaper than booking in advance from the US

You can visit Altun Ha from San pedro by boat for approx, 60.00pp with a afternoon stop off at Maruba Resort, lunch not included. You could book a spa treatment at the lodge whileyou're there. By boat to Lamanai is around 125.00 and the same if you fly part way. Ful day Tikal with everything except departure tax from intl airport is 280.00pp. <BR> <BR>I really like the Lamanai trip and using air from SP to Belize City cuts down on boat time, which is good if it's choppy or rainning. <BR> <BR>Katie Valk <BR>Belize

Going to Tikal in Guatemala is definitely worth the trip. It was a several hour van ride from where we stayed in the interior of Belize and it was wonderful!

We took a small plane from Ambergris to Florence, Guatamala and a short van ride to Tikal. It was fantastic and I would greatly recommend the trip.

We visited a ruin in Belize, not that far from San Pedro rather than going to Tikal in Guatemala. I wish I could remember the name. It was a tough drive, only about 20 Kms. but took us about 2 1/2 hrs. But, on the way, we encountered a jaguar on the road, wild birds, beautiful rain forest. And, the ruin in Belize is far larger than Tikal and thought to be far more advanced. It is not as well developed. The guides were wonderful. If it is raining, I would not venture to this site, but if dry, it is worth the trip. I believe it is called Carocal but am not sure. Sorry, I do forget things.

Actually, I said San Pedro and I meant San Ignatius. Caracol is in the interior. There are also the Rio Frio Caves and Cahal Peche that are most interesting. Have a good time.
