Belize -- Next Week!!! Suggestions Please!!
 

Hi!! <BR> <BR>My wife and I and our two children (16 & 22) are flying in to Belize next week for two weeks. We've been doing research but as yet haven't made any concrete plans. A big part of us likes to play these things spontaneously... <BR>Will probably rent a vehicle, stay on the mainland week 1 then probably spend week 2 on one of the cayes. But hey, we're open to suggestions!! <BR> <BR>Anyone with some good insights/experiences -- let me hear from you!!! <BR>

We're going to Belize on our honeymoon next April. We haven't booked anything yet but have done some homework. Ambergris Caye is more developed than Caye Caulker. Caulker, I'm told, is more like Ambergris used to be 10-15 yrs ago. We're considering a brand new place called The Iguana Reef Inn on Caulker. <BR> <BR>Anyway, I'm very interested to hear how your trip went. Please post when you return. Have fun!

We just got back from the southern part ( Monkey River area ) .it was like another world. ate lobster every night $10 bucks.Did some snorkeling out at Lime caye ( Saphodilla Cayes ).Did the Monkey River Trip and saw all kinds of great animals and birds (including monkeys and iguanas ). We stayed at Bob's Paradise,a remote place in the jungle and right on the ocean. My husband & I love the Island of Amergris Caye! We spent a week there at a very reasonable & nice resort called Ramone's Village. I highly recommend the place. Our room was about ten steps from the ocean! There is a website for the area as well as the resort, but I can't remember their addresses.(Try Yahoo). I do not at all recommend staying on Caye Caulker. It was pretty unappealing when we visited 2 years ago. The other Islands are very third world also. On Ambergris Caye, we mainly fished, snorkeled, and sailed. The water is gorgeous! I can't comment on the mainland since we didn't spend any time there. Have fun!

Be careful in Belize City. <BR> <BR>Best part of Belize is the Aztec ruins in the west, such as Xanantunich, and Tikal in Guatemala. <BR> <BR>Consider Cha Creek and Chan Chich. <BR> <BR>

Go to the Banana Bank Lodge for fantastic hiking and horsebacking riding on a cattle ranch. See the inland Blue Hole. We also went to Placencia and stayed in an unusual bed and breakfast and went to the Jaguar Preserve, which was a bit of a letdown. Ambergris Caye is okay, but try to stay away from the village. You may want to try Journey's End if it's still in business. <BR> <BR>The outer atolls are the best, especially if you're a diver or fisherman. No roads, very rustic, but truly untouched and beautiful. We stayed at Turneffe Island Lodge. Great fishing and the diving was among the best I have done anywhere in the world. There were less than 10 guests on the island when we were there. <BR> <BR>In November we travel to Lighthouse Reef Resort which sounds even nicer. <BR> <BR>Drive to the Guatamalan border, or better, fly to Tikal. The ruins in Belize are hidden, beautiful and a true adventure. The zoo just outside of Belize City isn't bad either. Just explore!!
