Belize in June
Hey - New here to the forum. First post.
We are planning to head to Belize in June. I know its not the best time to go there but will it be worth it? I have been 2x before this will be the first time with my 2 kids. We are planning 4 nights on either Caye Caulker or Ambergris and 4 nights in the jungle (looking at Black Rock). I just want to make sure that we wont regret the weather. Thanks |
You shouldn't have any problems. I've been three times in June. Once got hit with a tropical storm, crossed Central America from the Pacific. Tropical storms are rare in June in Belize. Another time there was an occasional rain shower. Third time, nothing but sun.

Thanks JeanH we are so excited. Now we have to decide on Caye Caulker or Ambergris...
|
I've been twice in July and/or August and will visit again this coming August; we find it to be a great time to visit. For us rain has fallen almost exclusively at night and served to cool things down.
For what it's worth, we prefer to do the inland part 1st and end up on the beach. On your Caulker or Ambergris debate, I vote Caulker and (I'm looking at my crystal ball here...) I predict JeanH likes Ambergris better. ;-) |
Thanks Hopeful, I have been to Caulker before and just loved it never been to Ambergris yet. I was thinking the kids might like a more active island.
Why do you do the jungle first? Thanks |
Hopefulist, you're funny. Also, you are correct, I do prefer Ambergris. But, I understand why some prefer Caulker. It certainly is quieter, less traffic. It's just a bit too quiet for me after a couple of days.
The beaches are better on Ambergris. There are some really fancy resort type places on Ambergris, which Caulker doesn't have. There's also more restaurant choices on Ambergris, at all price points. |
Well... Right now we are looking into Ambergris. I just saw one photo that made it look much more populated and touristy than I expected from Belize.
|
It just feels right to us to do the adventurous/ruins hopping/hiking/caving, etc. part 1st and then hit the beach and the water last. It wouldn't feel right to me to do it the other way, really. If you had more time - 2 weeks for example - you could start in a beachy place, go inland, and then end in a different beachy place but you don't have enough time for that.

I moved to Belize from Florida, and frankly, I feel there is no such thing as a bad time to visit Belize ! Of course, it will be hot, which is expected,, just like Florida is hot in June.YOU are SO Smart to slit it up on one of the islands, then come inland, you do not want to miss the ruins ! Plus downtown San Ignacio has just found artifacts underneath the main road in town ! You can see link here of interview with archeologist - http://www.youtube.com/user/BelizeMa.../2/je3vnbQRgFU
Enjoy your trip with your family ! Hey stop by and say hi, our office is next door to the Codds Pharmacy in San Ignacio !! Black Rock is really nice, more remote- Cahal Pech and Mahogany Hall are great to ! |
Thanks all for the replies! We cant wait. Our thought is that ambergris will be more kid friendly and I doubt we will take advantage of the night life in San Pedro.

San Pedro Lobsterfest a great time to plan around coming in June. http://sanpedrolobsterfest.com/
The organizing committee of San Pedro Lobsterfest is pleased to announce the official dates of the 2012 San Pedro Lobsterfest. Festivities will begin on Friday June 15th, 2012 and culminate with the traditional Lobsterfest Block Party on Saturday June 23rd, 2012. With 9 days of celebrations of all things Lobster, the 2012 San Pedro Lobsterfest is the longest and largest Lobsterfest yet! |
If jeanh hasn't seen much rain in June, she has been lucky. I live here and June can be VERY wet. It's the beginning of the wet season and in my experience, usually starts with a bang. Last year however, it was unusually dry -- I think we had more rain in May.
It usually doesn't rain every day (maybe every few days) and usually not all day (often at night). There's plenty of sunshine in between. |
Like I said, I've only been three times in June. Guess I was lucky. Except for the darn tropical storm, when it rained for four days straight. The last night it rained 14 inches, sunk almost 100 boats.....
|
We've been in early July and had pretty good weather, just a few afternoon showers. We really loved Ambergris. I was glad we stayed outside of town at Victoria House - gorgeous beach and very uncrowded.
|
Well we made up our mind and our reservations. We are staying on Caye Caulker at Caye Caulker Condos. 4 nights there and then to Black Rock. Kids are so excited. This will be my 3rd time (though over 20 some years). Wish the kids were old enough to scuba but they will love snorkeling.
|
Sounds like fun - please come back with a trip report.
|
Have a great time - the kids will love it.

I wrote about my trip here - http://www.fodors.com/community/mexi...ze-in-june.cfm
It was wonderful. So about the rain - it did rain almost everyday - usually in the afternoon. At first I think we came in on the tail end of a depression so it was cloudier but after the first 2 days the rain was really welcome. One night the rain did scare the youngest a little with the thunder but she got used to it. Our kids had an amazing time. Heard my oldest say she didnt want to come back. Main thing for us was I had never really used guides before and they were really great. We had planned on renting a car and we were so happy we didnt. |
