Belize first time. Advise needed.
We are planning a 4 day trip to Belize. We would like to stay in a 4 star resort on the beach, with a restaurant/bar in the hotel or in walking distance. Where do you recommend? Are there any beach resorts on the mainland? Or do they all require taking a boat or plane?
Thank you for your help. Inor |
Victoria House is amazing - really beautiful with a white sand beach and beautiful water, palm trees, hammocks, a pool, and both an upscale restaurant and a bar with good food. It's on Ambergris which is reachable by boat or ferry. We flew over on Tropic Air. If you go, don't miss snorkeling at Hol Chan. It's some of the best snorkeling we've ever done. There are other resorts on the mainland if that's what you're looking for.

Robert's Grove looks interesting, but we are not comfortable flying on a small plane, and their site suggests that renting a car and driving there might result in us not wanting to drive back.
Is it a difficult drive? Do you recommend using a private driver or taxi to get there? Or is the plane really the only way to go? Thanks, Inor |
There are many good beach resorts on the mainland, Turtle Inn on the Placencia peninsula and Hamanasi in Hopkins being perhaps the current best, but there are many just below their standard such as Laru Beya and Robert's Grove in Placencia (actually both are in Seine Bight).
I've driven to Hopkins and Placencia dozens of times over the past 21 years, and with the paving of the Placencia Road it is now a pleasant drive all the way. The Hummingbird Highway is beautiful, the most scenic road in Belize. Take the Boom bybass around Belize City rather than driving through the city. From the international airport near Belize City figure a little over three hours by car. --Lan Sluder |
