Belize ATM cave - how tight are the spots?!
DH has mild claustrophbia and is ok with ATM, as long as there are no LONG tight spaces (like can't see end to end). We tend to do all our activities as a family and hate to miss ATM if its do-able. Any specific details on ATM you can share?

There is one short tight spot, that I recall, but email [email protected] and ask them.

There are a few tight spots but nothing like a tight tunnel or long hallway with tight walls.
You might want to reconsider your "everybody does it or nobody does it philosophy". We felt that part of what was perfect about our recent Belize trip was that dozens of things were on offer and everybody did just the things that were a perfect fit for them. That way we all enjoyed some down time and some time with just our spouse or a small group. The times when all of us were together (a few times 10 of us) were even more special because we weren't together all the live-long day. Just my 2 cents' worth... |
If he has true claustrophobia, he should skip it. It's not the long tight spots, but it is confining at times. You can't see sometimes where you're going. You're climbing over and under rocks and there are rocks in front of you, over and under you. As we were coming out of the cave the one thing I said to my husband was "I could see how someone with claustrophobia wouldn't like it"....and the problem would be that once he's in, if he panics, there's no where to go but further in or out. If you have to go out, you'll all have to go out and miss the cave.
I agree with hopefulist - while he might not want to miss ATM and you usually do it all together (we're the same way)this might be one to split up on. On our recent trip to Belize, I did SCUBA for the 1st time, and my husband tried but couldn't do it. He didn't like the breathing. Unfortunately he had to sit on the boat the whole time while we were out there. It's good to feel it out first though, call Pacz tours - they maybe could give you some insight. |
I'm a "little" claustophobic, but ATM didn't affect me that way. Not like getting stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel did-- surrounded by big trucks and their fumes!
No extended tight spots, but will the darkness bother him (except for the headlamps, it is black)? I'm GUESSING it would be okay for him, but certainly there's no way to know for sure, I suppose. |
