backback necessary?
Do you think we should bring backbacks along for hiking? We will be staying at hotels in Tortuguero, Manuel Antonio, the Cloud Forest, and Arenal, and plan to take some of the hikes, but I have no idea how long they are or how strenuous. Your input would be appreciated, because these items take up room in the suitcase. Last year in Belize, we really needed them.

I have a good sized fanny pack that has two water bottle holders that I use. It is always nice to have something to tuck things into. I find it much cooler to hike with that than I do a backpack. If you plan on getting box lunches and going on all day hikes you might want your backpack. It just depends on how much you feel you need to carry.

Do you mean daypacks? If so, then yes. I always carry my daypack. In fact, it doubles as my purse when I travel to Costa Rica so I don't have to pack it. Makes it much easier to carry my camera, umbrella, binocs, bandanas, water, snacks, etc.

I do the same thing. I don't pack it. .I just carry it on as my purse! (Inside it I also carry a smaller shoulder purse that I can use separately if necessary). Wherever I am, my backpack is with me. . .at the pool, on tours, etc. In San Jose, I carry it in front (or have my husband always walking behind me). I went several times without one, but found the last 2-3 times they are very handy! I don't usually keep it on my back, but rather slung over a shoulder.

I found my daypack/backpack to be very useful for extra clothes (to take off or put on) poncho, binoculars, medicines, extra contacts etc etc.
