There are more than 12 tango shows working in Buenos Aires so people can have a wide range of options.
Five can be considered the ones that offer much more than a satisfactory show and a good meal.
Each of the tango shows has 2 types of reservation, the standard: around 50 or 60 u$s, the VIP ones: for u$s 110, 130, 140 each person. and sometimes a good mixture of the two.
All of them offer discounts if the group is for four.
Carlos Gardel is in my humble opinion the best now, nice decoration, good show, good dinner etc
Piazzolla has the most beautiful decoration and no other show can beat them. No doubt!!! Dinner is very good specially if it is the vip place.
Dont like Señor Tango that much, too touristy. only an opinion.
I find La Ventana a good option, like the place and the show.
Madero is ok, perfect for the ones who live there but maybe my expectation was higher
Complejo Tango is also a good place where you can also tango before the show.
There is a new version now in la Boca.
Boca Tango, the meal is ok. the place is really very good, interesting to see how these people lived in those days. There are actors moving all the time in the italian and spanish digs of decades ago. maybe the dialogues are difficult for the tourists who dont speak the language, the show was good and so was the service.
To end the list. Querandi is ok and for less money.
a piece of advice:
Go to Las Violetas or Tortoni early in the morning for a breakfast or in the evening. Try to avoid lunch time cause Tortoni is crowded and noisy. They sometimes offer shows and you have to make a booking on the phone. The atmosphere is soooo nice
that is worth a visit.
Also visit the museum Carlos Gardel. Interesting
Good luck, enjoy Buenos Aires.

We loved the tango show at Cafe Tortoni. Here's a website that might help you make a decision.

Giovanna: I tried www.todotango.com and it came up: site unavailable. Is that the correct website?

Thanks avrooster for that. You haven't answered my plea for the best way to see Patagonia? I did say the dates we would be there: Feb 24-March 3rd. Is it worth cutting the Pat. stay by 2 days to go to Punte del Este?

I agree with the Tortoni (plus you can just visit and drink some coffee and pastries) and Carlos Gardel (Esquina Carlos Gardel is the full name). The show is very good. There are other shows you can go that offer tango lessons before, but they are very touristy. I'd go for the two mentioned here. Enjoy!
