BA Side Trip to Colonia?
 

Is it better to go to Colonia on a weekday or weekend? What are some of the pros and cons of each choice?

I don't think week or weekend would really matter as far as things to do on Colonia. It is pretty small and basically centered around tourism. My sister and I went in March on a weekend. The ferry schedule is the main difference. Also be very aware that the time in BA and Colonia is not necessarily the same. We, along with several others missed the ferry when we showed up and found that Colonia time was different. We ended up on a much slower local boat. And, we had asked in Colonia about the boat and no one pointed out the time difference. This also happened to a German woman and Canadian gentleman who recounted similar stories on the slow boat back to BA.

I went to Colonia in January on a weekday. It was relatively quiet and very pleasant. I would think that on the weekend it gets a bit crowded and you might have to wait to get a table at one of the cafes. Colonia makes a great day trip so enjoy!

I would definitely go on a weekday. You can certainly wander around and see the entire historic district very easily on your own. Personally, I think for a first visit it's probably worth hopping into one of the tour vans right outside the port - most of the guides speak relatively fluent English (I recommend Beatrice from CityTour), and they'll show you more of the city than just the historic area - all for about $10 for 4-5 hours. You'll find out more fun details than you would by just wandering too. On the other hand, if you just want to grab a table at a nice cafe and look out over the water...
