ATMs

We are going to the Iberostar Paraiso Maya next week. Are there ATMs available there and do they dispense US dollars or just pesos?

As far as I know, ATM's always dispense the currency of the country in which they are located.

I have seen a few ATMS in Mexico that dispense dollars--but very few. I was never really looking since I always use the local currency of the country I am visiting.

This has come up before when a poster from Europe needed to get a fairly large amount of U.S. cash to pay for a tour. Unfortunately I don't remember the answer!

I would simply bring whatever US cash you think you need from home. Then take out peso to spend in Mexico.

Off the track a bit, but in response to Suze's mention of "a poster from Europe needed to get a fairly large amount of U.S. cash to pay for a tour." If that was true then the tour company was acting illegally. All Mexican businesses are required by law to accept Mexican pesos for payment, and those who demand dollars (such stories sometimes arise) can be reported and fined rather heavily by the consumer protection agency here.

I do not think the organization was a Mexican business. This was some sort of a European student tour arranged by a European provider (if I'm remembering the story right).

Ryberg- ...but thank you for your post. That is a good piece of information to know!
