At BdC in CR, did you use the mosquito nets while sleeping?
 

Our sleeping arrangements at BdC include a couch bed for my 13 yr old nephew. BdC advised that it does not have a mosquito net but most people don't use them anyway in bed as the cabinas have screens.

We had it down around the bed, but we didn't tuck it under the mattress or anything like that. It wasn't like there were swarms of bugs flying around the cabin, but we did have the net around us while we slept. I think if it wasn't there at all, I would have been fine - we saw very few bugs in our cabina while we were there - but did see a HUGE roach on the floor one morning - the netting wouldn't have kept that out anyway!

We stayed in one of the "stucco" construction deluxe cabinas (La Palma) with a loft. The windows were screened but the cabina also had wooden shutter-type doors along the two sides with the wrap-around porch. These weren't screened. The cabinas with the lofts also have a big opening in the V of the roof that's not screened.

We left all our doors wide open day and night and used our mosquito nets. My son used his in the loft as well. We also had lights on to read at night. So we definitely had bugs! They weren't the biting kind so I didn't really care but my husband and son were both pretty diligent about checking the bed and using the nets.

Yes, we always used the nets while we slept and while we were reading in bed; the reading light attracts little flying bugs - nothing too scary, just wanted to keep them out. We slept with the louvers on the windows open, but the windows were screened behind that so that kept out a lot of bugs. We also slept with the sliding front doors closed but lots of people leave them open for ventilation.

Yes, I did, never a huge amount of bugs but just in case as I never wanted to be woken up feeling something on me!

We used the nets because they were there, but slept with all the doors open. The mosquitoes didn't seem to be bad during the night. It was during the day on the trails they got us. I think they carry something at the outdoor stores (not candles, but something else) that you could set around too.

Without a net it's no worse than camping. ;)

We did the same thing as ShellD and had the nets around the bed but didn't worry about tucking them or anything.

We ended up with a couple of roaches and a few flying insects (including a firefly) in our cabin; never saw anything on the bed... If anything crawled on us during the night, we certainly didn't know about it! I would think your nephew will do just fine.

We used the net the first time we were there and ended up with a huge spider inside the net! We decided not to use them, and haven't since. No problems--that we know of!

The mosquitoes were not that bad when we were there; we got them more in the tropical garden than in our cabin. I was more worried about a bat than any insect that might get in. Hip freaked me out with her story!

Thanks again everyone. My nephew is used to camping out but when he heard about the scorpions, well that was a different story. I am sure he will be so tired he won't even notice anything.
