Argentina tax?

I am in Buenos Aires now and am doing a lot of shopping. Now, my friend has a travel book (albeit almost 8 years old) that says that there is a tax of 18% on any amount over $200 of goods taken out of Argentina. I havent been able to find any language to confirm this. Does this sound at all true to anyone?

I have seen a lot of posts recently about BA hotels. So, I paid $30 a night for a double room at the Carlton Hotel on Libertad. It has a 4 star rating and it suits us just fine.
Doesn't sound true to me. I was in BA at the end of December and flew on to Sao Paulo. There wasn't any tax on things that I purchased. There was a departure tax that I paid in cash, and $18 sounds right. The potential for taxes would be duties at Customs at the next country you visit.

Bill

On the contrary, you can get a reimbursement for some of the goods you purchase. Look for shops with the sticker TAX FREE and if you buy something for more than AR70, you get like a cheque and then you can get the VAT (which is 21% in Argentina) reimbursement at the airport.

Cintia thanks for that information. I was not aware. I bought a lot today..I look forward to the reimbursement at the airport.

Yes, thank you Cintia, why travel agents never say this?
