It was just reported in the New York Times today that some drug gangs in Rio are targeting tourist destinations with gunfire and bombs. It seems a hotel on Copacabana was sprayed with bullets and another hotel had a bomb explode near the lobby. Two Americans and their actor friend were accosted at the train station on their way to Corvocado.

It was an article in the travel section, if that will help you find it online. No tourists have been hurt, and Rio has been increasing police presence. I get the "paper" NYT.

I also read the "print" version of the NYTimes. The story was on page 3 of the Travel Section, Sunday, April 27, 2003.

In addition to the other notes, Brazil requires a $100 visa for Americans entering the county. Argentina requires nothing but your passport.

We're off to BA in a couple of weeks.

For your information, Brazil has a "reciprocal visa policy," which means that it requires visas of citizens from countries that require visas of Brazilians. Americans, Canadians, Australians, and New Zealand citizens all need visas to enter the country.

Basically, some of the people who are pointing to crime in Rio are the same people who will tell you that the U.S. State Dept. warning about crime in BA are overblown.

If you want to visit spectacular beaches and get great views of a city in a world class scenic setting then go to Rio. You'll be spending $500, at least, to get there and several hundred more for a hotel.

If you are interested in what Rio has to offer, then you'll just have to bite the bullet and pay the $100 for the visa. It is good for five years.

Iquasu Falls is probably better served from Brazil than from BA.

That depends on your state of spirit. Rio is hot, sexy, exotic, exuberant, wonderful, with legendary beaches, it has a humid athmosphere of happiness, joy of life....it is complete different from Buenos Aires. If you want no emotions and be depressive, i advice you BA. Go there, get the melancholic decay of the city, and cry out your sadness at a tango spectacle.

Nobody said anything bad about Rio. I was reporting on an article that was in the New York Times. I have been to Rio, but I have never been to BA, so I can't compare the two cities. And while I live in one of the biggest crime-ridden cities in the world (Philadelphia), there is a difference between being mugged and having the drug mafia throwing bombs at tourist sites.

I think that cwill 's question is wrong from the outset because both cities are totally different and choosing one over the other depends on a personal choice.
It makes no sense, it is similar as asking
what do you prefer London or
Athenes, or New York or San Francisco...... there is a tremendous lack of information regarding South American countries, in my opinion there is a tendency to think all South American countries are similar and they are very different one from the other.

That takes part on the strong emotions thar Rio causes. Rio is adrenaline...it's where hell lives with heaven. A great place! I love Rio!!!!!!

Rio is just wonderful and so is Bs As, but ur choice will depends on what u really want. Rio offers u beautiful beaches, nature, adventure, party and culture. Bs As is full of culture and the city is very charming and romantic. Violence exists in any big city. Tchau!
