Apparent military coup in Honduras

The president of Honduras, Jose Manuel Zelaya, is apparently under military detention this morning. Today was to have been the day for a referendum on whether or not he can run for a second term next year. The constitution currently prohibits him from doing that. Some reports are saying that the Honduran military has taken him out of the country.

No reports on any effect on travel in Honduras.

Scary stuff - here's another account:

Zelaya arrived in Costa Rica this morning and will request political asylum.

Other reports are saying he is in Venezuela. That would make more sense, since he is a supporter of Hugo Chavez.

The president is in Costa Rica. According to reports, he was spirited away with nothing but the pajamas he was wearing when military forces came to his home early this morning.

Some of the news footage I've seen shows some violent-looking protests in Tegucigalpa. Not sure what's going on other places in the country.

Yes Jeff...it's all over the news. Unsettling. If changes need to be made, I hope it's made without bloodshed & changes are for the good of the people.

I did talk by phone to someone at a hotel in Copan this afternoon. She said everything seems calm there.

Thank you for the updates. We have a trip planned to Roatan at the beginning of August, and hope to be able to keep our plans!

Your trip is coming up soon, Hopefulist. Are you flying in to San Pedro Sula or Guatemala City? Are members of your group anxious?

hopefulist Jul 7th, 2009 01:53 PM

I'm flying into Guatemala City next week and out of Belize 5 weeks later - no time in Honduras this summer. I had set up study trips with college credit for 3 women to travel to Honduras, 2 this week-end and 1 a few weeks later. They're still figuring out what to do. I think 1 is deciding to just cancel her flight but I think the others will switch to Guatemala or Mexico for study if they don't feel Honduras is the right place for them. So sad!! The foks at the Ixbalanque school report absolute calm in Copán and the buses are running again, just no telling what might happen over the next few weeks which is especially intimidating for folks who don't speak much Spanish. That's life, I guess!

I'd be reluctant to go to Tegucigalpa right now, but not elsewhere in the country.

Just had an email from Copan Chamber of commerce...same report that Copan is calm and the border crossing between Guatemala and Honduras safe. Still the worry of it all.
