Anyone been to Playa Del Carmen?

Looking to stay somewhere south of Cancun away from "The Maddening Crowd". Beach and ocean is most important feature, not interested in nightlife. Just want to chill out for a couple of weeks. Any suggestions as to where to stay. Prefer a condo, but if water and food is a problem in that area, will stay at resort.

My husband & I have been to all the major resorts areas in Mexico and done a lot of the Caribbean but Playa Del Carmen is our favorite...There's so much to do and see there or you can just do nothing but relax in the sun with a book and a tropical drink!!

Check out PLAYAGUIDE.COM for lots of info on that area...

Have fun... LIZ

Try Akumal, a sleepy little town about an hour's drive south of the Cancun area. It's a diver's heaven, with a large shallow bay for beautiful snorkeling and deeper water for scuba divers. There are only a few hotels, but we rented a beautiful villa right on the beach for very little money. The area is also famous for its "cenotes," which are underground, water-filled caverns, and there is one spot where natural rock formations create a beautiful enclosed pool area perfect for protected swimming. Nightlife, as it is, is centered around the bars at the two hotels, and a handful of beachside restaurants where you literally dine at the waters edge on tables set up by the waiters. Loved every second of it.

Been to both PDC and Akumal. Both are great but Akumal has a better beach although it is more expensive.
Actually the place that might fit you best is Isla Mujeres. Can send you a 15 page travel document on the Island and surrounds if you request.

We've been going to the Akumal area for over ten years and it is definetly the jewel of the Riviera Maya!!!! Last year we bought a condo there. We rent it out when we aren't there. If you would like to take a look at it, check out this website:

BTW...Akumal is only 20 to 25 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen. It is a fun place to go and spend the day and then it is nice to get away from it all in Akumal. There are wonderful restaurants there and you are close to everything, and yet in a world away...
