In my opinion, cash is better. In the larger cities such as Puerto Vallarta they can buy most anything they would want.

As far as Housekeepers are concerned, I agree that cash is much better. And pesos are better than US Dollars. Typically, housekeeper's and most resort workers live far from the resort and exchanging dollars to pesos takes some effort on their part. I usually leave the equivalent of $2.50-$3.00 per day. Have fun!

I asked. Cash is what is truly appreciated - then they can get what they want.

Another vote for tipping cash & in peso.

I've spent alot of time in Puerto Vallarta (15 trips to date). I can't think of anything I've ever wanted/needed while I was visiting that wasn't readily available in the stores in town.

I'm on good terms with my favorite room maid, since I return to the same hotel often. I tip a little each day, then a bit larger at the end of the stay. That seems to be the right thing to do, in my experience.

Pesos it is! When I was in Dominican Republic I met a lot of people who had brought toiletrie items etc for gifts and many who brought dollar store items like kids toys and used them to barter with at the flea market. I was assuming since I have been to Cancun also that money might be best in PV. Thanks everyone!

I would do a combo thing. Yes, cash for the adult but also a particularly "American" kind of doo-dad toy.

Two things:

1. Acknowledging a kid is appreciated a lot in Mexico.

2. The kid gets a smile and some status with his/her buddies.
