any info on Mahahual
 

Hi there. I am looking to travel to Mahahual with my boyfriend sometime in February. We want an undeveloped, secluded, and beautiful place to visit. We had wanted to travel to Belize, however plane fair was quite expensive. We plan to fly into Cancun and drive south. We have found a eco-friendly villa resort near town. Has anyone traveled to this area to snorkel, relax, swim, fish and site see? What are the local restaurants like? I would be happy to cook, but it seems that the place we are looking into staying does not have a kitchen.

Are you aware that this past August the eye of Hurricane Dean made landfall (as a category 5 storm) directly over Mahahual?

My favorite eco-resort, Kailuumcito, which was in Mahahual, was completely destroyed. I have no knowledge about how fast things are getting rebuilt but you might want to ask some questions.

Hi again

Did a little more checking and found a website which gives the current state of affairs in Mahahual (updated Nov 25th so it's very current). If you click through the website, it does give a list of restaurants that are up and running

What scares me though, is if you click through to the "building the Boulevard" page, is that it appears as if the government plans to rebuild Mahahual as a cruise ship haven (there goes the neighborhood) but that's progress I guess.

Please write a trip report when you return so we will know firsthand how Mahahual is doing.

Thank you very much for those resources. I had come across Balamku while searching for a destination spot. That particular eco-resort reported very little damage. I was not however aware of the magnitude of damage throughout Mahahual. We don't have anything booked at this point. Do you think we should still consider this area. From a humanitarian stand it could be very helpful to the area to have tourist dollars. However, I also want our trip to be wonderful. Do you have any suggestions?

You might want to consider Xcalak (short drive, about 45 minutes from Majajual). We have been there 4 times and it was reported on several boards that Xcalak sustained very little damage from Dean, while Majajual was quite hard hit.

I would check out the lodgings for that area on bill-in-tulsa.com, locogringo also represents a few hotels in Xcalak but Bill probably has the most comprehensive listing. He also reps a few of the sites in Majajual. Have booked with him and he is very reputable.
