Any CR fans ever been to island of Dominica?

We went to CR last year, and spent all of our time at Bosque del Cabo - loved it, loved it. Am wanting an adventurous vacation for 2009 already (just got back from a beachy vacation in Cozumel this year)! I've started looking into Dominica, specifically Jungle Bay. As much as I loved BdC, the thought of something new interests me. Have any of you who know the draw and magic of CR ever been to Dominica? Can you give me any comparisons?

I've been to Costa Rica 4x now and Dominica is very high on our list of "must see" places.

Yes, a few fodorites have visited....simply type Dominica into the search box.

Diana is one that comes to mind.

I think you need to type Dominica on the Caribbean forum to see the postings....

Thanks, bellaboo. Some of the posts are fairly old when I did a search, and no one gave any comparisons, so am hoping for some fresh opinions!

It's been a few years since I was there, but Dominica reminds me of what Costa Rica was like about 15 years ago. The tourism infrastructure was there, but it's not anywhere near as well developed as Costa Rica's. But you have the same appearance as southern Costa Rica and the same opportunities for wildlife viewing and the same rough roads. Dominica was an adventure, but I loved the place.

Like I say, it's been a few years, so for all I know, the place has turned into Aruba. No, I don't think it has, and I hope it never will. I think Dominica sounds like a good choice, and would be interested in hearing what it's like today if you decide to go. I have a feeling it won't have changed much.

Wildlife viewing, really?
I didn't think the island had a lot of wildlife, that's cool.

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have phrased it as "same opportunities for viewing wildlife." That's an exaggeration. A lot of good birding though.

Just noticed on the forum, bellaboo, that you are Faithie! I spent a lot of time on the Latin America forum last year and remember reading your posts. You've done a lot of traveling, and to some cool places!

We stopped at Dominica on a cruise in 2005 and I would love to go back and stay on the island. It was very undeveloped (no big shops, etc.) just very nice people and beautiful scenery. Thick forests, waterfalls. One of my favorite islands.

We also stopped there on a cruise for the day.

It was very lush, laid back, we went to a nice waterfall and swam in it.

I think there's more to do in CR, as well as more diverse landscape and wildlife. It's probably much more expensive to fly to but cheaper to stay though.

I've been to Dominica a few times, most recent was 4 years ago. It's a very beautiful island-- lush and green, the scuba diving is excellent, people are very nice. Economically the island was quite depressed during my last visit, so be prepared for lack of infrastructure and some poverty.

Where is Isla Provincia Colombia, faithie? You amaze me!! Have a great time, but I need to know which site to find your posts for when you get back!!! I am not traveling (since Santa Barbara last May for a wedding) due to having some elective surgery this winter but am planning our Hawaii trip in Aug. for our 30th anniv. (kids too). I can't wait to hear of your trip and hopefully see pics too! Dyer in South Dakota

I'm not Faithie, but I love Providencia, Colombia. Was just there in January. Small island, a few hundred miles off the coast of Nicaragua, although belonging to Colombia.

Green, lush, hilly, nice beaches, beautiful water. The way I imagine the Caribbean must have been 50 years ago.

A few restaurants, some beach bars, a few small hotels.

Thank you JeanH I will be researching for awhile, what a great way to spend time instead of watching t.v. Thanks for mentioning the book to Faith too, I am an avid reader and travel through my reads too!!! Dyer

Just a follow up. We have decided to return to CR next year and Bosque del Cabo! Our plan is to have a reunion with fellow Fodorites we met there last year, making the trip extra fun. Since there was nothing we didn't like about CR, I know we will have another great vacation. Dominica is still on our list for someday.
